Written in compound rhythm, Invention No. 12 in A major moves with a continuous sway. The motif unfolds in regular groups and then passes from one voice to the other; its lightness disappears when every note receives the same accent.
Sequences and changes of register move the harmony beneath a very fluid surface. Locate the bass, imitations and cadences separating each stage. Both voices need to retain independence even when they share exactly the same rhythm.
Practise the subdivision while beating the main pulses, then group notes towards their destinations. Bring out each voice separately with both hands before seeking balance. Keep a light articulation, a supple wrist and little pedal; at cadences, breathe without interrupting the sway preparing the next phrase.
