Innocence is a Moderato in F major and 3/4. A simple melody moves above an even broken accompaniment, with roles and positions changing as the phrases unfold. The transparent writing exposes unwanted thumb accents and an over-present bass; the main relief must remain in the upper line.
Repeats create a balanced miniature through dynamic growth, release and the return of opening material. The first beat supports the metre without becoming heavy. Short slurs require a supple renewal of sound, and cadences need room to breathe before the pulse resumes.
