L’Arabesque, the second study in Op. 100, is an Allegro scherzando in A minor and 2/4. The right hand spins rapid figures while the left punctuates the bar with chords. Its lively character depends on clear articulation and a light hand; giving every note equal weight makes the motif stiff and the metre heavy.

The opening material is set against a more connected middle episode before the theme returns. Dynamic changes, accents and small shifts of register shape this compact form. The left hand must preserve the rhythmic frame without covering the upper pattern, especially as the music grows towards forte.

Isolate each group of four semiquavers and check thumb crossings at a reduced tempo. Practise the left hand with a short chord followed by immediate release. Join the hands in two-bar units without pedal, then connect those units while keeping the same pulse through the central passage and the return.
