La Styrienne is marked Tempo di Valse and opens in G major and 3/4. Its springing melody rests on a first-beat bass followed by lighter chords. The swing does not come from repeatedly slowing down; it grows from the hierarchy of three beats and the impulse towards the next bar.

A C-major episode renews the colour before the return. Accents, short slurs and dynamic changes give each repeated section a distinct profile. Left-hand chords should remain brief and supple; when overplayed, they hide the line and make the dance square.
