About this work

Duo no. 2 from the K. 487 collection is a Menuetto with trio. Unlike the three numbers preserved in Mozart’s autograph, it is known only through the later printed tradition and its authenticity is disputed. It remains commonly played by two horns, with simple and directly readable writing.

The Menuetto divides melody and accompaniment between the two parts, after which the trio lightens the texture and broadens the note values. The da capo return restores the first dance. Contrasts depend less on virtuosity than on the quality of phrase endings, repeats and shared dynamics.

Keep the first beat clear without a heavy accent. Both horns should breathe together at cadences and tune thirds and sixths carefully. In the trio, sustain long notes without allowing the pulse to drop. On returning to the Menuetto, recover the opening character without accelerating or mechanically repeating the same dynamics.
