About this work

Duo no. 8 from K. 487 is a more extended Allegro than the surrounding pieces. It is transmitted by the later publication rather than Mozart’s autograph, so its authenticity is disputed. This version follows the common practice for two horns and presents both parts on equal staves.

The movement alternates stepwise motifs, repeated notes and answers between registers. Several fermatas briefly interrupt the motion before an a tempo return. The second page extends the exchanges and passes the accompanying role from one partner to the other until the final cadence.

Choose a comfortable Allegro in which articulations remain together. Prepare each fermata through a shared reduction of energy, then resume exactly in the chosen pulse. The lower part must not disappear in repeated notes: give it phrasing and rebalance dynamics whenever the roles exchange.
