About this work

Duo no. 9 from K. 487 is titled Menuetto. It is not among the three pieces preserved in Mozart’s autograph, and its authenticity remains disputed. This 1-page edition presents it for two horns in a compact form where the parts regularly exchange melody and support.

The phrases begin with almost homorhythmic simplicity, after which the lower part gains motion while the upper sustains or closes. Repeats articulate several successive sections. The dance character depends on clear upbeats and cadences more than a strong accent on every first beat.

Practise the upbeats together and place breaths after cadences rather than in the middle of a direction. Tune intervals when the parts move in the same rhythm, then give the mobile bass as much presence as the upper line. Maintain one tempo across the sections and use repeats to refine the balance.
