In variation 2 of the Sonata K. 331, the transformation occurs chiefly in the left hand. An almost continuous stream of triplets supports a more spacious right-hand melody punctuated by trills and brief answers. The theme’s form and cadences nevertheless remain immediately recognisable.

The challenge lies in the division of roles: the left hand is highly active but must not become the foreground. In the second section, both hands exchange more movement and the spans grow wider. Dynamic contrasts give shape to a texture that could otherwise sound uniform.

Practise the triplets alone with fixed fingering and a calm pulse, then add the melody without stressing every bass note. Trills should belong to the direction of the phrase. Prepare shifts of register early and keep cadences clear, without slowing before every repeat.
