Azulejos earns its title: the music assembles brief motives like pieces of colour, then shifts them through harmony that seems to change with the light. Albéniz left the work unfinished. Enrique Granados completed its continuity, and this double history should remain present without turning the join between their contributions into a theatrical seam.
At the piano, begin by separating the planes. One line may hide inside repeated chords while another continues in the upper register. Practise these voices independently and mark every point where the balance changes. Pedal helps connect harmonic colours, but it must be renewed often enough to preserve friction and bass movement.
The challenge lies less in one isolated virtuoso run than in the general density. First reduce chords to their essential notes in order to trace the direction, then restore the texture gradually. Granados’s completion does not turn the fragment into a pastiche; it extends the material through his own judgement. A convincing performance accepts this shared continuity instead of pretending it does not exist.
