35 chorals - BWV 690-724

About this work

This extensive group of chorales is not a cycle conceived as a single continuous whole. It gathers varied settings associated with the BWV range from 690 to 724: some clearly expose the cantus firmus, while others fragment or ornament it, or surround it with freer counterpoint. Each piece therefore requires its own listening key.

Textures move between two-stave writing and layouts with a separate pedal part, while the chorale melody may change voice. The first task is to find it, then identify the motif organising the accompaniment. Gathering these pieces under one cover should not erase questions of transmission or attribution attached to individual entries.

Choose a few contrasting chorales rather than reading the collection as a long uniform suite. Sing the cantus firmus, locate ornaments and cadences, then build a registration suited to its place in the texture. Note documentary differences instead of imposing the same pedal use and touch throughout.
