Cantate BWV 001 - Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern

About this work

The morning chorale stands at the centre of the opening chorus, carried by the soprano in long notes. Around it, two concertante violins draw bright figures, while horns and oboes da caccia give the sound a colour both festive and deep. The richness of the scoring must never conceal the principal melody.

In choral rehearsal, sing the cantus firmus alone first, then add the other voices while keeping its accents as reference points. Melismas need momentum as well as consonants placed together. In the orchestra, paired instruments should converse rather than compete. Light articulation makes the figures sparkle more effectively than an accent on every note.

The inner arias gradually reduce the forces and bring the words closer to the listener. Preserve this change of scale: less volume, greater attention to language and colour. The final chorale returns to collective simplicity. It closes the journey without adding one last coat of brilliance, like a light that has become steady after all the opening reflections.
