About this work
Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben turns the question of death into a soundscape. In the opening chorus, regular pulses and repeated notes suggest bells, while a very high flute draws an almost unreal light. The soprano carries the chorale melody above this network of strings and oboes d’amore.
The tenor aria extends that fragility in a demanding dialogue with flute. After the recitative, the bass introduces more assertive energy and shifts the cantata’s centre of gravity. The final chorale does not deny the opening anxiety; its harmonisation frames it and gives it collective form.
The first movement needs a very steady pulse, but the bell figures must not become mechanical. Separate the cantus firmus from the imitative lines before assembling the chorus. In the tenor aria, agree breathing points and ornaments with the flute; in the bass aria, retain momentum without hardening consonants.
