Cantate BWV 009 - Es ist das Heil uns kommen her

About this work

Es ist das Heil uns kommen her opens with a chorale fantasia whose layers are exceptionally clear. The melody is sustained in the soprano while flute, oboe d’amore, strings and lower voices develop flexible counterpoint. The accompaniment is not merely a background: its concertante motifs continually set the cantus firmus in perspective.

After the bass recitative, the tenor aria pairs the voice with a highly mobile solo violin. The next recitative prepares a soprano-alto duet in which flute and oboe d’amore add independent lines. This texture of several partners leads to the final chorale, more compact yet still attentive to voice leading.

In the opening, rehearse the soprano chorale and lower-voice imitation separately. Concertante instruments should breathe with the choir without covering the text. For both arias, first establish the meeting points between voice and obbligato instrument; in the duet, pay particular attention to equal attacks and vowels.
