About this work
This cantata, long published under the number BWV fifteen, is no longer regarded as a work by Johann Sebastian Bach. Scholarship attributes it to Johann Ludwig Bach and also identifies it as JLB twenty-one or BWV Anh. one hundred and fifty-seven. That history explains its presence in older Bach editions, but the current attribution should guide its reading.
The score proceeds through a sinfonia, choral movements in counterpoint, recitatives, arias and a final chorale. Ritornellos, continuo lines and cadences belong fully to the culture of the early eighteenth-century Lutheran cantata, yet these procedures should not be used to reconstruct an imagined Bach style.
In rehearsal, treat each number according to its function: a clear rhythmic foundation and distinct entries in the choruses, flexible diction in recitatives, then precise dialogue with instruments in the arias. Retain the former attribution on working material because it helps identify historical sources, while giving Johann Ludwig Bach his proper place as composer.
