About this work
Herr Gott, dich loben wir opens the year with the German Te Deum. The choir states the chorale melody in a texture where horn supports the soprano, surrounded by oboes, strings and continuo. The writing moves with dignity, but inner voices and instrumental replies prevent ceremonial stiffness.
A bass recitative leads to an unusual movement in which the solo voice launches an acclamation answered by the choir. This alternation tightens the bond between individual speech and community. The tenor aria, accompanied by a low obbligato instrument, then creates a more intimate space before the concluding recitative and chorale.
In the opening, make the cantus firmus immediately recognisable without over-projecting horn or soprano. The bass-and-chorus movement requires very clean entries and equal vowel lengths in collective replies. In the tenor aria, allow the obbligato instrument’s colour to determine the flexibility of articulation.
