About this work
Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe was written for Bach’s Leipzig audition. The first movement begins as an arioso: tenor and then bass present the narrative before the choir suddenly enters to represent the disciples’ reaction. This shift from individual narration to the crowd immediately gives the cantata a theatrical dimension.
The alto aria converses with a solo oboe in an anxious, winding line. The bass recitative is supported by strings, which give it particular gravity, after which the tenor aria adopts a more confident stride. The final chorale extends that confidence to the whole ensemble.
In the opening, prepare the change of status between arioso and chorus carefully: the collective entry should surprise without breaking the tempo. Alto and oboe should agree ornaments and breathing together. The accompanied recitative requires strings to listen constantly to the text; the tenor aria should move firmly without stiffness.
