Cantate BWV 025 - Es ist nichts Gesundes an meinem Leibe

About this work

Es ist nichts Gesundes an meinem Leibe superimposes several layers in its opening chorus. The voices develop the text in counterpoint while cornetts and trombones state a chorale melody in long notes. Recorders, oboes and strings add sighing figures, turning the illness named in the text into a collective texture rather than a simple descriptive effect.

After the tenor recitative, the bass aria concentrates anxiety in an energetic line supported by continuo. The soprano recitative then opens into an aria whose instrumental motion lightens the colour without erasing its gravity. The final chorale returns the melody to a shared vocal disposition.

In the opening, isolate the brass chorale first, then vocal entries and finally instrumental sighs. Every layer should remain identifiable when combined. Soloists should rehearse their arias with the bass line as an anchor while keeping cadences active. The final chorale must not slow at every line ending.
