Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig makes the flight of time almost visible in motion. In the chorale fantasia, instruments and lower voices run through rapid scales while the soprano sustains the cantus firmus in longer notes. The chorale’s stability is thus continually crossed by what disappears.
The tenor aria continues this instability through a lively line and sudden changes of direction. After the alto recitative, the bass receives a firmer aria supported by low instruments, then the soprano prepares the final chorale. Each number changes perspective while preserving motifs of motion and fragility.
