Cantate BWV 029 - Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir

About this work

Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir opens with a spectacular sinfonia in which Bach transforms the Prelude from his Violin Partita into a concerto movement for organ and orchestra. The formerly solitary line now passes through trumpets, timpani, oboes and strings. Virtuosity becomes a public gesture suited to the election of the town council.

The following chorus develops solemn counterpoint that Bach later reused in the Gratias agimus tibi and Dona nobis pacem of the B minor Mass. Recitatives and arias for tenor, soprano and alto then change the scale of the discourse. The final chorale restores trumpets and timpani, closing the architecture in the same light as the opening.

In the sinfonia, the organ must remain clear without reducing the orchestra to passive accompaniment. In the chorus, stabilise vocal entries before adding brass. The arias instead require chamber-like listening to obbligato partners. Prepare the final chorale at tempo, keeping its fanfares integrated into the phrase.
