About this work
Der Himmel lacht! Die Erde jubilieret belongs to Bach’s Weimar period and opens with a purely instrumental sonata. Three trumpets, timpani, oboes and strings establish celebration before the choir enters. The vocal movement retains this brilliance in a broad architecture where contrapuntal entries remain supported by a jubilant pulse.
The following movements gradually descend towards more intimate textures: bass recitative and aria, then tenor, and finally soprano. That last aria prepares the concluding chorale. Above the vocal harmonisation, an independent high part extends the opening instrumental light and gives the ending a sense of ascent.
Rehearse the sonata and chorus as two panels of one gesture, with shared articulation in trumpets and strings. Soloists should differentiate their arias without breaking the gradual reduction of forces. In the final chorale, stabilise voices first, then add the descant, which should shine without covering the text.
