About this work
Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen takes the form of a dialogue between the Soul, sung by soprano, and Jesus, sung by bass. The opening aria pairs the soprano with oboe in a search full of suspensions. The bass recitative offers an answer, but the relationship is built in stages rather than resolved at once.
A second soprano aria becomes more animated around an obbligato violin, then the next recitative brings both characters together. Their duet finally passes motifs between the voices above a dancing accompaniment. The final chorale moves this intimate dialogue towards the community and gives the exchange an external conclusion.
Both soloists should learn the other’s motifs before rehearsing the duet. In the first aria, the soprano must breathe with the oboe; in the second, follow the violin’s inflections without losing textual clarity. Keep the recitatives direct in speech so the final rapprochement remains perceptible.
