Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ opens with a chorale fantasia in which the soprano cantus firmus dominates a highly mobile texture. Oboes, strings and lower voices answer one another in imitation, giving the familiar melody fresh breath. The confidence of the text is built within the counterpoint rather than placed above it.
The bass recitative leads to an alto aria whose flexible line is supported by the first violins. After the tenor recitative, soprano and bass meet in a livelier duet: their entries cross and complement one another rather than merging. The final chorale at last returns the melody to the foreground.
In the opening, sing the chorale alone, then add imitation in pairs of voices. The alto should retain light articulation with the violins. In the duet, locate passages where one voice answers the other and those where both cadence together. Keep the final chorale connected without systematic accents on every beat.
