About this work
O ewiges Feuer, o Ursprung der Liebe opens Pentecost with three trumpets, timpani, oboes, strings and an animated choir. Long melismas on ewiges and orchestral ritornellos give the fire continuous radiance. Some of this music comes from an earlier wedding cantata, but its new arrangement fully serves the liturgical text.
After the tenor recitative, the alto aria reduces the forces and allows flutes to establish a gentler colour. The bass recitative prepares the final chorus Friede über Israel, which begins inwardly before recovering festive brilliance. The work therefore ends through expansion rather than a harmonised chorale.
In the opening chorus, coordinate melismas with string figures before adding trumpets. The alto should breathe with the flutes and keep consonants light. In the finale, prepare the transition between inward peace and celebration carefully; the dynamic change should grow from the phrase without a sudden acceleration.
