About this work
Dazu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes gives the second day of Christmas the energy of battle. In the opening chorus, horn, oboes and strings support rapid figures around an affirmative text. Vocal entries remain clear despite the agitation because Bach regularly opposes counterpoint with more directly chordal proclamations.
Three chorales mark the course and give the work an unusual framework. Between them, recitatives and arias shift perspective: the bass proceeds with a resolute line, while the tenor converses with two horns in a more martial movement. The last chorale gathers the brilliant colour without artificially extending the battle.
Rehearse the chorus’s rapid motifs with strings before adding winds. Compare all three chorales to preserve common diction and phrasing while varying intensity. In the tenor aria, horns must articulate with the singer, not against him. Keep recitatives brief and directed towards the next number.
