About this work
Schauet doch und sehet opens with a broad choral lament. The voices proceed through suspensions and descending lines above a dark orchestra; Bach later reused part of this music in the Qui tollis of the B minor Mass. Grief arises from counterpoint and harmonic delay rather than uniformly slow pacing.
The tenor recitative leads to a bass aria where trumpet gives the text unusual hardness. An alto recitative accompanied by recorders changes the colour, then the alto aria pairs the voice with oboes da caccia. The final chorale gathers these timbres into a restrained conclusion.
In the opening chorus, prepare every dissonance with a stable pulse and shared resolutions. The bass should articulate with the trumpet without imitating its weight. In the alto aria, balance both low oboes around the voice. The final chorale can remain mobile despite its gravity.
