About this work
Wer sich selbst erhöhet concentrates much of its weight in the opening chorus. An orchestral ritornello prepares the entries, then the fugal subject passes from one voice to another across a very long trajectory. Oboes and strings maintain momentum while allowing vocal polyphony to occupy the centre.
The soprano aria reduces the forces and sets the voice against a highly mobile obbligato violin. After the recitative, the bass receives an aria whose firmer rhythmic foundation answers the previous flexibility. The final chorale closes the cantata without reproducing the opening movement’s scale.
Learn the choral subject in every section before assembling entries. Long spans must remain directed towards their cadences. Soprano and violin should agree breathing and ornaments; the bass should work on stresses without hammering. The final chorale benefits from clear diction and an active pulse.
