Cantate BWV 048 - Ich elender mensch, wer wird mich erlösen
About this work
Ich elender Mensch, wer wird mich erlösen superimposes an instrumental chorale melody upon the opening chorus. Trumpet and oboes sustain it in long notes while the voices develop independent counterpoint. Individual lament thus becomes a collective space crossed by a stable line not directly named in the text.
The alto recitative leads to a first chorale, then the alto aria narrows the texture. A tenor recitative and aria continue the course from another angle before the final chorale. Both harmonisations are more than pauses: they structure the movement from anxiety towards reassurance.
In the opening, make the instrumental chorale audible alone before adding free voices. The trumpet should support the line without dominating the text. Alto and tenor should rehearse their arias from the ritornellos and continuo bass. Compare both chorales to distinguish their functions while retaining coherent diction.
