About this work
Ich armer Mensch, ich Sündenknecht is one of Bach’s few cantatas centred upon solo tenor. The opening aria surrounds him with flute, oboe d’amore and strings, whose short motifs and sighs extend the declamation. The voice must remain intelligible within this delicate texture.
The first recitative leads to a more spare second aria where the vocal line confronts the accompaniment directly. Another recitative prepares the final chorale, the only moment when the complete choir appears. This change of forces turns an individual conclusion into a collective response.
In the first aria, distribute breathing among tenor, flute and oboe d’amore without broadening every cadence. The second aria needs a steady pulse and very direct text. Recitatives should retain momentum towards the next movement. Bring in the final choir without a break in colour or tempo.
