Cantate BWV 056 - Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen

About this work

Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen gives the bass a line whose difficult intervals embody the weight of the Kreuzstab. The obbligato oboe takes up and extends its motifs above strings and continuo. The first aria proceeds with gravity, yet its motion must remain perceptible beneath expressive stresses.

The accompanied recitative then turns the crossing into a journey, with string figures tracing motion. The second aria adopts a lighter, dancing character before a final recitative. The complete choir enters only in the last chorale, giving a collective answer to the solo bass’s course.

Practise the opening aria’s wide intervals within continuous breath rather than isolating each difficulty. Bass and oboe must share cadences. In the accompanied recitative, strings should follow prosody rather than a rigid beat. Keep the second aria mobile and prevent the chorale from becoming heavy.
