Cantate BWV 058 - Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid

About this work

Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid is a dialogue cantata in which soprano represents the Soul and bass Jesus. In the opening duet, the soprano sustains a chorale melody while the bass develops a free line. Oboes and strings surround this superimposition without turning the chorale into mere accompaniment.

After the bass recitative, the soprano aria converses with an obbligato violin in a more mobile texture. A recitative then brings both characters together, and the last duet restores the relationship between steady melody and free commentary. The cantata therefore closes without a separate four-part chorale.

First sing the soprano chorale without bass, then add the free line while preserving its separate words. Soprano and violin must breathe together in the aria. Keep recitatives close to speech. In the final duet, balance both characters without allowing the chorale melody to overwhelm the dialogue.
