Cantate BWV 063 - Christen, ätzet diesen Tag

About this work

Christen, ätzet diesen Tag opens Christmas with exceptional forces of four trumpets, timpani, oboes, strings and choir. The first movement alternates fanfares, vocal blocks and contrapuntal passages within a highly developed architecture. Brilliance does not erase voice leading; every entry contributes to the construction.

The cantata is organised symmetrically around three recitatives. A soprano-bass duet occupies the first half and an alto-tenor duet the second. The last large chorus restores the festive forces and closes without a harmonised chorale, through another unfolding of ritornellos and counterpoint.

Rehearse both choruses with strings and oboes before adding four trumpets. The duets should offer intimate contrast; unify vowels and cadences without seeking choral scale. Recitatives serve as swift hinges. In the finale, retain precise entries despite density and volume.
