Cantate BWV 064 - Sehet, welch eine Liebe

About this work

Sehet, welch eine Liebe begins as a motet: four voices build the text through imitation, doubled by cornett, trombones and strings. The first chorale follows this close polyphony immediately. Their proximity gives the opening a gravity deliberately removed from a merely brilliant Christmas sound.

An alto recitative then turns the work towards renunciation of the world. A second chorale interrupts the course before the soprano aria, then the bass prepares a more intimate alto aria. The third chorale, on the Jesu, meine Freude melody, closes eight movements without restoring the opening forces.

In the first chorus, tune instrumental doublings to the voices and keep entries intelligible. Treat the three chorales as different stages rather than identical refrains. Soprano and alto should ground their arias in the continuo and partner instruments while retaining direct diction.
