About this work
Erfreut euch, ihr Herzen transforms festive music composed at Köthen into a cantata for Easter Monday. The opening chorus retains a dance-like energy in triple metre, carried by trumpet, oboes, strings and continuo. New words do not erase the theatrical flexibility of the original material.
The bass receives a recitative and aria before alto and tenor enter a long dialogue. These voices represent Fear and Hope, first in a recitative mixed with arioso and then in a duet with solo violin. The final chorale places their conversation within a collective conclusion.
Do not overload the opening chorus; its pulse must remain dance-like. The bass should articulate with the trumpet without competing in volume. Alto, tenor and violin should agree every transition so the contrast between fear and hope is audible without becoming caricature.
