Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt begins with a chorale fantasia where the soprano melody dominates a fabric of strings and oboes. Bach then changes scale abruptly: soprano, violoncello piccolo and continuo form a light core, extended by an independent instrumental ritornello.
This aria and the bass aria reuse music from the secular cantata BWV 208. A bass recitative narrows the text between them. The final chorus adopts severe writing with cornett and trombones, very different from the opening, and ends collectively without a harmonised chorale.
In the first movement, support the cantus firmus without immobilising inner voices. Soprano and violoncello piccolo should share articulation, retained in the ritornello. The last chorus needs impeccable entries and common diction, with direct tone rather than excessive weight.
