Cantate BWV 069 - Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele

About this work

Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele is the late version of music intended for a town-council election. Three trumpets, timpani, three oboes, bassoon, strings and choir give the opening public breadth. Vocal counterpoint must nevertheless remain as clear as the fanfares framing it.

The soprano recitative leads to an alto aria where oboe and first violin form partner lines. An accompanied tenor recitative then prepares the bass aria with oboe d’amore. The final chorale reunites the large ensemble and gives the harmonisation a ceremonial close.

Rehearse the chorus with strings and oboes before adding brass. In the alto aria, balance oboe and violin around the voice; the bass should breathe with the oboe d’amore. In the chorale, trumpets must crown phrases without covering choral consonants.
