Cantate BWV 070 - Wachet ! betet ! betet ! wachet !

About this work

Wachet! betet! betet! wachet! reworks and enlarges an Advent cantata whose original form is lost. The chorus launches its injunctions over an urgent ritornello where trumpet, oboe, strings and bass proceed through short motifs. Part one alternates recitatives and arias before a first chorale.

Part two opens with a tenor aria that renews the initial call. In the following bass recitative, the trumpet sounds an instrumental chorale while strings depict the shaking of the world. A bass aria and second chorale bring the total to eleven movements.

Establish in the opening a pulse capable of spanning both parts. The trumpet must remain precise in calls and instrumental chorale alike. Rehearse accompanied recitatives with the orchestra, identifying every change of texture; both vocal chorales need common diction despite their different positions.
