About this work
Gott ist mein König was written at Mühlhausen for the installation of the town council in 1708 and became the first Bach cantata printed during his lifetime. The score divides three trumpets and timpani, recorders and cello, oboes and bassoon, strings, voices and organ into distinct groups. Spatial exchange matters as much as collective power.
After the first chorus, a tenor dialogues with the soprano chorale over obbligato organ. A vocal quartet, bass arioso and alto aria continually alter the scale. Two choruses end the work, the last reuniting instrumental groups and alternations between soloists and ripieno.
Place the families so their replies remain perceptible and rehearse each group alone first. The obbligato organ should lead the second movement without covering either voice. In the outer choruses, distinguish solo and tutti passages clearly; ceremonial effect depends on this architecture, not continuous volume.
