Cantate BWV 073 - Herr, wie du willst, so schicks mit mir
About this work
Herr, wie du willt, so schick’s mit mir does not begin with a continuous chorale. Phrases of the melody alternate with tenor, bass and soprano recitatives, linked by an immediately recognisable instrumental motif. Two oboes, strings and continuo give this scene unity despite its changing voices.
The tenor aria reduces accompaniment to oboe and continuo. After the bass recitative, the next aria sets an obbligato part, assigned to horn or organ in different versions, against the voice. The final chorale restores four-part simplicity after this highly contrasted sequence.
Rehearse the first movement as a scene, fixing every return of the motif and every move into recitative. The tenor should breathe with the oboe; the bass must shape phrases around the obbligato without covering it. In the chorale, unify consonants and let the cadence arrive without added emphasis.
