About this work
Die Elenden sollen essen was the first cantata Bach presented in his new Leipzig post, in May 1723. The large opening chorus moves from an orchestral introduction into a vocal fugue. Three recitatives and two arias then lead to the chorale Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan ending part one.
After the sermon, a sinfonia restates that chorale on trumpet above the strings. Part two distributes recitatives and arias to alto, bass and tenor before another harmonisation of the same hymn. Fourteen movements thus form two connected panels rather than a uniform sequence.
Rehearse both parts around their shared chorale and compare the final stanzas. In the first chorus, maintain long direction through the fugue. The sinfonia trumpet should reveal the melody without weight; all four arias need their own instrumental colour and scale.
