Du sollt Gott, deinen Herren, lieben places the double commandment at the centre of a contrapuntal chorus. Above voices and strings, the slide trumpet sustains an instrumental cantus firmus in long notes. This independent line gives the movement a structure that must be heard without dominating it.
The bass recitative leads to a soprano aria with two oboes. A tenor recitative accompanied by strings then prepares an alto-tenor duet supported only by continuo. The final chorale is present in the score, but its text has not survived and should not be supplied by conjecture.
Learn the trumpet melody separately before superimposing vocal counterpoint. The soprano should breathe with the oboes; alto and tenor need common articulation in the spare duet. Rehearse the final chorale’s notes and cadences while stating clearly that its original text is missing.
