Cantate BWV 078 - Jesu, der du meine Seele

About this work

Jesu, der du meine Seele builds its opening chorale fantasia over a descending ground bass. The soprano holds the cantus firmus while other voices, flute, oboes and strings develop figures of lament and motion. The regular bass unifies a very dense texture.

The duet Wir eilen mit schwachen, doch emsigen Schritten immediately changes character as soprano and alto move over a light repeated bass. A recitative and tenor aria with solo flute lead to an accompanied recitative and bass aria with oboe and strings. The final chorale restores the hymn’s last stanza.

In the opening, make the ground bass audible without weighting every return. The duet requires exact rhythmic equality between both voices. Tenor and flute should rehearse coloratura together; the bass should hear oboe and strings as a concertante group. Keep the last chorale mobile and clearly syllabic.
