Cantate BWV 086 - Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch

About this work

Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch begins with a bass arioso in which Christ’s words are entrusted to a measured line accompanied by strings. The following alto aria changes perspective through an obbligato violin whose quick motifs surround the voice. No large chorus opens the cantata.

The soprano then presents a chorale with two oboes d’amore while strings continue their own fabric. A tenor recitative leads to his aria with strings, and the final chorale reunites four sections. The two chorale forms thus frame the second half.

In the arioso, the bass should retain textual authority without slowing. Alto and violin should prepare their imitations separately. In the soprano chorale, keep the melody above the oboes; the tenor then needs light articulation before the collective close.
