Bisher habt ihr nichts gebeten begins with solo bass, oboes and continuo. Christ’s words take the form of an arioso rather than a chorus. The alto recitative shifts the text towards an individual response before an aria with two oboes da caccia.
A tenor recitative prepares the bass aria, now supported by strings in more animated writing. The final chorale is the cantata’s only collective vocal intervention. The move from low winds to strings therefore accompanies a precise progression rather than a simple colour change.
In the opening, let the oboes frame the bass without masking consonants. The alto should breathe with both oboes da caccia and retain their flexibility. Clarify string motifs in the bass aria, then approach the chorale without adding weight absent from the rest.
