Cantate BWV 089 - Was soll ich aus dir machen, Ephraim ?

About this work

Was soll ich aus dir machen, Ephraim? opens with a bass aria where horn, oboe, strings and continuo support severe declamation. The voice does not oppose a choir but occupies the movement’s centre alone. Silences and returning ritornello give the text its weight.

The alto recitative leads to an aria accompanied almost entirely by continuo, a radical change after the opening. A soprano recitative restores strings before the final chorale. Five movements thus move from large forces towards bareness and then a collective answer.

In the opening, balance horn with oboe and keep bass attacks clean. The alto should build the aria from the continuo line without slowing at silences. The soprano recitative should prepare the chorale’s colour, which benefits from remaining mobile.
