Cantate BWV 093 - Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten

About this work

Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten places the chorale melody in the soprano within an opening carried by oboes, strings and a siciliana rhythm. The three lower voices develop independent counterpoint. The gentle sway must not make the text indistinct.

A bass recitative inserts fragments of the hymn, then the tenor aria transforms its melody into instrumental motifs. A spare soprano-alto duet presents it in vocal unison before a tenor recitative, soprano aria and final chorale. Each stage narrows or broadens the same material.

In the opening, keep the sway regular and the cantus firmus clear. The bass must reveal quotations without breaking the recitative. Soprano and alto need rigorous tuning in the unison duet; the soprano aria then recovers greater freedom before the final harmonisation.
