About this work
Was frag ich nach der Welt sets the soprano chorale above a highly mobile transverse flute, oboes, strings and lower voices. The contrast between long-note melody and flute ornamentation gives the first movement its tension. Balance must preserve both planes.
After a bass aria with continuo and tenor recitative, the tenor aria brings the oboe forward. A chorale stanza occupies the centre, followed by an alto recitative, alto aria with strings and the final chorale. Eight movements alternate free forms with explicit returns of the hymn.
In the opening, let the flute breathe without covering the cantus firmus. The bass should build the aria from the continuo, and the tenor hear the oboe’s cadences. Compare central and final chorales, then give the alto aria enough momentum to connect those landmarks.
