Cantate BWV 096 - Herr Christ, der ein'ge Gottessohn

About this work

Herr Christ, der einge Gottessohn lets the soprano chorale melody, reinforced by horn, float above a high obbligato instrument, oboes and strings. Depending on the version, this brilliant line belongs to piccolo flute or piccolo violin. Its continuous motion illuminates the cantus firmus without replacing it.

The alto aria then narrows the forces around an obbligato oboe. A tenor recitative leads to a soprano-tenor duet with strings, and the bass recitative prepares the final chorale. Six movements move from broad superimposition towards increasingly direct vocal writing.

In the opening, tune the high instrument precisely with soprano and horn. The alto should breathe with the oboe; the duet needs common articulation among both voices and strings. Keep the bass recitative directed towards the chorale rather than slowing before its cadence.
