The BWV 99 setting of Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan opens with a notably transparent chorale fantasia. Transverse flute and oboe d’amore exchange figures above the strings while the soprano sustains the melody. Lower voices answer in mobile counterpoint.
A bass recitative leads to a tenor aria with obbligato flute, whose long coloratura extends the instrumental play. After an alto recitative, soprano and alto join in a duet with oboe d’amore and continuo. The final chorale concentrates this wealth of colour.
In the opening, balance flute and oboe d’amore around the cantus firmus. The tenor must breathe with the flute and keep coloratura even. Soprano, alto and oboe should build the duet as a chamber trio before a plain, clearly articulated chorale.
