Cantate BWV 100 - Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan

About this work

All six hymn stanzas are retained without paraphrased text in BWV 100, Bach’s third setting of Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan. The first chorus adds two horns and timpani to oboes, strings and voices while the soprano carries the melody. Festive forces do not prevent lower parts from developing counterpoint.

The second stanza becomes an alto-tenor duet, then the soprano dialogues with flute. The bass receives an aria with strings, the alto an aria with oboe d’amore, and the final chorale gathers all instruments. Each stanza gains its own colour without leaving the common source.

Learn the shared hymn before approaching its transformations. In the chorus, add horns and timpani after clarifying voices. The duet and three arias need chamber balance; in the last chorale, brass should crown cadences without covering the text.
