About this work
Ihr werdet weinen und heulen begins with an agitated chorus, but the bass interrupts it with an arioso carrying Christ’s words. Returning chorus surrounds this calmer line and creates a genuine scene. Oboes, strings and continuo participate in every change of tension.
The tenor aria pairs the voice with a high obbligato part, transmitted for flute or violin in different versions. An alto recitative leads to her aria with oboe d’amore, then a tenor recitative prepares the final chorale. Six movements move from collective confrontation towards a more inward answer.
In the opening, rehearse chorus and bass arioso separately, then fix every interruption. The tenor should articulate with the obbligato instrument without hardening the line. Alto and oboe d’amore must breathe together, and the final recitative retain motion into the chorale.
